‘The Wave’, an eye-catching residential and retail tower on Queensland’s Gold Coast, has left a number of illustrious international developments in its wake to take the Silver Medal in the annual Emporis Skyscraper Awards. The 35 storey tower takes its name from a waveform exterior designed to provide all residents with panoramic views of the ocean and area around Surfer’s Paradise. The building’s architect, the Gold Coast firm DBI Design, took their inspiration from the idea of ‘a ribbon caught in a stream, wrapping around a stick’.
The contractor for the design and construct project was Multiplex, working with Hyder Consulting as its civil and structural designer. The tower was constructed from a series of reinforced concrete slabs of varying floor plate, supported by shear wall framing. Each level is surrounded by reinforced concrete cantilever balconies and curved pre-cast edge panels. The structure is fully transferred at Level 5 on a 1200mm deep post-tensioned transfer slab above the retail zone. Protruding over the retail areas are large post tensioned cantilever awnings, the iconic feature of this innovative structure. This year’s Gold Medal winner was New York’s Hearst Tower.
The Wave placed ahead of highly acclaimed structures such as Eureka Tower in Melbourne, 1180 Peachtree in the United States and the Hesperia Tower in Spain.
